Hope Grows Art Residency
Hope Grows is occupied by Robert Czaplicki, the founder and farmer, Caryn Bopp, the art person, and three awesome dogs. If you are not a dog person, this residency might not be for you. The dogs are really loving, but also really excitable, and new people really get them excited. We cannot guarantee that they will leave you alone completely. Also because of this, no other pets are allowed by residents.
The artist (or collaborative couple) spends 2 weeks at Hope Grows in order to start or complete a pre-approved project. The studio consists of two connected rooms; one is approximately 12 by 16 feet, and the second is approximately 10 by 16 feet. We are solar powered, but have ample power for lights and tools. Additionally, the outside grounds can be used for workspace if needed and discussed prior to your arrival.
The housing is modest but comfortable. There is a small 10 by 10 foot cabin for the residents just off the studio building. There is a bed and a dresser. The bathroom is shared with Robert and Caryn, and is not attached to the artist residence cabin, but it is less than a minute walk away.
Because of the offgrid status of the property, the artist must plan ahead for their projects so that we will be sure that your project is possible out here. Paintings, drawings, silkscreen, and other 2D work are definitely doable. Some 3D work is also doable, as long as you know what space you need, what tools you need, and what materials you need ahead of time. A car is required due to the rural nature of our location.
The studio is equipped with 2 by 8 folding tables that can be arranged as the artist sees fit.
The artist can use the tools that are in the studio. These include:
Battery powered drills
Battery powered saws (circular saw, jigsaw, sawzall)
Screwdrivers of all sizes
Wrenches of all sizes
Clamps
Snips and scissors
The artist pays 50?/ week/ person (so 100/ week for couples) for use of the studio. The artist is responsible for bringing materials with them that they need. We are in a rural, remote area and art materials are hard to come by out here. The nearest large town is about a half hour away, and there isn’t an art store there (not even a chain one). You can opt to ship your materials here and we will have them stored safely for you when you get here.
You will have access to a kitchen stocked with pots and pans, utensils, plates and bowls, as well as a place to store your food. During the growing season, you may eat from the garden as well as the food you bring. The nearest grocery stores are 30 minutes away, so stock up once and be done for the rest of the time.
The summer is hot, but there are fans and popsicles!
